Hijrah privacy policy
Draft: to be checked before publishing. Last updated: [date of publication].
Hijrah is an app for learning Islam. We built it to work without collecting your personal data.
What we collect
Nothing. Hijrah has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
What stays on your device
The following is stored only on your phone and is never sent to us:
- the name or username you choose (optional)
- your learning progress, streak and points
- your Hifdh sessions (lines recited, words recalled, time, the lines to practise again, and which lines you recited, for the review schedule)
- your settings (language, appearance, reminders, fiqh path, reciter)
- the place you chose for prayer times (if you chose “My location”, rounded to about 100 m) and your mosque’s iqama times, if you entered them
- copies of Qurʾān text and recitation timings, kept so the app works faster and offline
Deleting the app deletes all of this. You can also reset your progress in Profile.
Services the app connects to
To show the Qurʾān and play recitations, the app downloads content from:
- the Quran Foundation (api.quran.com, api.qurancdn.com): Qurʾān text, translations, reciters and timings
- quranicaudio.com and everyayah.com: recitation audio
Lesson and book audio is downloaded from audio.hijrah-app.com, hosted by Cloudflare. It receives the same technical request data.
Like any website, these services receive your device's IP address when the app requests content. They do not receive your name, progress or settings. Their own privacy policies apply.
Location
The app asks for your location only when you choose “My location” for prayer times or the Qiblah. It is used on your phone to calculate prayer times and the direction of the Qiblah, and to schedule prayer reminders. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. The place name is looked up by your phone’s system.
Microphone (Hifdh mode)
The app asks for the microphone only if you turn on “Listen to my recitation” in Hifdh mode. Your recitation is then turned into words by your phone’s own speech recogniser, on the device (Apple’s on-device recogniser on iPhone, Android’s on-device recogniser on Android 13 and later), to show each word you say. The app never records or keeps the audio, and never sends it to us or to anyone else. If your phone cannot recognise Arabic on the device, listening is not offered and nothing is sent to a server instead. On Android, the Arabic model may first have to be downloaded by the system, if you ask for it.
Reminders
Naseeh reminders are scheduled on your device. No notification server is involved, and you can turn them off in Profile or in your phone's Settings.
Reports
When you report a bug or a content error, the app opens an e-mail to reports@hijrah-app.com. You see the whole message before sending it, including the technical details attached (app version, device model, system version, app language, the screen you reported from). We use these reports only to fix the problem, and we do not share them.
Children
Hijrah includes a Kids Corner and collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date above. If we ever start collecting data (for example for a future questions-and-answers service), we will ask for your consent first.
